Triumph has finally taken the wraps off their latest motorcycles, the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X. Built in collaboration with Bajaj, these motorcycles will be manufactured in India. Both machines get an all-new engine and will be launched in India on July 5, 2023. Once launched, these will be the smallest capacity motorcycles offered by the British two-wheeler manufacturer in India.
The newly-developed 398 cc, single-cylinder motor is capable of producing a peak power of 39.4 hp and a peak torque of 37 Nm. This liquid-cooled motor has been mated to a six-speed gearbox and gets a ride-by-wire system. Traction control is present on both models and can also be switched off.
Both bikes come with disc brakes on both wheels and dual-channel ABS, however, the 400X has the option of switching off the rear ABS. This can be handy when riding off-road. The Speed 400 rides on 17-inch alloy wheels while the Scrambler gets a bigger 19-inch wheel at the front. Suspension duties are handled by a 43 mm USD fork at the front and a monoshock at the back. While the suspension hardware might be the same between the two, the Scrambler 400 X gets an additional 10 mm travel for the USD forks and 20 mm for the monoshock compared to the Speed 400.
Overall, the Scrambler 400 X is longer, taller and wider than the Speed 400. The Scambler gets a wheelbase of 2,117 mm and has a total length of 1,190 mm while the Speed 400 gets a 1,377 mm long wheelbase and a total length of 2,056 mm. Seat height of the Speed 400 stands at 790 mm while for the Scrambler 400 X it is 835mm. As a result of the changes in kit, the Speed 400 weighs 170 kg and the Scrambler 400 X tips the scales at 179 kg.
